Ok, I have a guess. However, since I’m going right off the bat and since I won’t have the chance to put up another picture until at least tonight (as I’ll be out of the house all day) I have a request for Mr Lyre: if my guess is correct, don’t indicate it right away, and let people throw a few more out there in the interim.

That said, it’s a hunch only, as I haven’t seen the film for a while. Is this “Paris Belongs to Us”? Whatever, the source I really like this image.

Actually, I don’t think it’s the right aspect ratio though I can’t find the tech specs on IMDb.

    “Ghost”, perhaps? I read there’s a Japanese remake of that in the pipeline. Then again, that movie isn’t in black & white, unless that’s from a brief flash or something. There IS a cat in the movie, I recall.

Aye Joel, I’ve been making my rounds at other sites expressing my condolences. We have lost a screen icon for sure, and his Frank Booth has become part of the culture. I was preparing to make mention of this sad event on the Tuesday Morning Diary.

The most important clue here is the frame. It’s 1.66 and, furthermore, though the buildings look French, I think it’s an American film, I’d say from the 1950s from the style of back-projection behind. Not sure what, but I’d go in that direction. There were very few 1.66 films made outside of the US or UK in the 1950s, it was either 1.33, 1,78 or 2.35.

    Louis Malle is one of my favorite directors. When this was re-released by Criterion, it was shown in an indie film fest near me. It was the first time seeing it. I as stunned. It is one of my fvorite films. I knew what it was right away. It is so odd, yet charming to see the car during that scene. No one does it like Louis Malle.

    Elevator in the Gallows was actually one of the first films that occurred to me – with the Paris Belongs to Us, I definitely saw the background as Parisian and something about the image quality, the light and composition just shouted “late 50s, early 60s”. I couldn’t put my finger on why exactly. I also vaguely remembered some sort of black cat in the film. When Allan & you mentioned 1.66 I went to IMDb and searched the tech specs for this film and, sure enough, it was in that aspect ratio.
    
    I really liked this film, btw, though it seems to get knocked a lot. Yes, it is fundamentally a clever film, but it’s so alive with invention and atmosphere. I like Malle a lot though my favorite films of his tend to be the documentaries (that said, I have not seen many of his early New Wave flicks, like the ones that Criterion released a few years back – Fire Within, The Lovers, etc.)

Wow – I immediately thought this was the Malle film when it first went up… but it was oh so late and I was oh so tired and I for the life of me couldn’t think of the title…and I thought, no way…I’m never right on these things so why even bother looking it up on IMDB…

—but what’s this about a remake being planned?

  There’s a Japanese remake coming this October. The trailer looks a bit over dramatic, and there’s no Miles Davis score!

I love Louis Malle. The Fire Within, The Lovers, Damage, everything he does is amazing. I just emailed the new “Guess that Pic” to the person in charge. It should be up soon!
