Update March 9 2009 – Dualist correctly guessed The Dark Mirror (1946)
Tony d’Ambra has generously offered up a free sealed Criterion DVD of Samuel Fuller’s Pickup on South Street as acknowledgment of the recent celebration of noir and Maurizio Roca’s current countdown. Only the WitD staff members are exempt from participation. The screen cap is shown below. First correct answer in the comment thread wins the prize – clues will be progressively added at bottom:
Clues – clues will be added as the Noir countdown progresses:
- A Hollywood film
- Not The Woman in the Window (1944)
- A shrink at half the price.
- Not Shock (1946)
- More than one mikado
- Not The File on Thelma Jordan (1950)
- William Talman is not in the cast.
- Olivia and Olivia

Hi! Sam Juliano, Allan, Tony, and WitD readers…
Nice Move Tony!…Good-Luck! to the…Winner!
DeeDee
Am I the only one who can’t see the pic?
Ed, I am at school now, and just got onto the WitD site. The picture is up; are you still having trouble seeing it?
Never mind, now I can. Don’t know what it is, though.
Good show. I’m sure clues with be forthcoming Ed.
“Only the WitD staff members are exempt from participation.”
Frack.
Actually, it’s spelled without a C, Jaime. At least in the modern BSG era, anyway (that way, it can be a real four-letter word).
I think I know this. One of two possibilities. Someone is looking at a great dvd if they answer correctly.
We should offer prizes more, love this idea!
A Woman in the Window?
I will be offering clues as the countdown goes on. The first is that it is a Hollywood noir.
Sorry Frank, it is not Woman in the Window.
I will add the clues to Sam’s post so they are all in the one place, and add a link to the comp on the SideBar.
Is it The File on Thelma Jordan?
Yikes – could never guess these in a million years, but fun to see how the answer evolves – Cheers!
Clue #3: A shrink at half the price.
Shock, 1946
Duallist, you seem pretty certain there! Hope it pans out. Good guess from you too Drew.
Not quite sure.
Just guessing from third clue. On assumption that it’s no Edward Dmytryk. That’d be too easy for WitD!
Clue #4 Sorry Dualist, not Shock (1946)
Clue #5 More than one mikado
Clue #6 Sorry Drew not The File on Thelma Jordan (1950)
No clue.
Does William Talman act in it?
Sorry Dualist William Talman is not in it.
Okay let’s make it a WHOLE lot easier.
Clue #8: Olivia and Olivia
Drew came pretty close to it! So it is a Robert Siodmak film. The Dark Mirror (1946). Olivia de Havilland dual role.
I’m not complaining (esp. with the prize involved), but I haven’t seen it yet!
Congrats Dualist!

Thanks Tony. I mailed my address.
The elation of winning makes me want to contribute to such contests in future. Next countdown perhaps? What’s the genre/criteria? Will decide the prize accordingly.
Congrats Duellist!!!
You hung in there throughout!!!
Of course your participation would be appreciated in every sense at this site. Suggestions are most welcome.
Nothing more than conduct the next ‘screen cap’ contest for April. The DVD will depend on the genre countdown around that time.
You’re on for that Duallist!!!!!
looks like Ingrid Bergman. my guess is “Spellbound” by Hitchcock.
Picked up “Pickup On South Street”
Thank you Tony.

Btw, I have decided the gift for my April Screencap contest. It’d be sealed criterion blu-ray disc of Tati’s “Playtime”. Watch out.
