I don’t know you
I have held you, kissed you, slept with you
A crazy love
For all the wrong reasons
Until down a dark alley a bullet to the heart
(Tony D’Ambra)

Hi! Sam Juliano, Allan and WitD readers…
I asked Tony, if he could contribute a poem as I take a look at writer Dashiell Hammett this week and in a “blink Of an eye” he sent me this 5 line(s)poem [In reality it's called a Quintain (poem) because Tony's poem has only five lines]…
…Now, if I had to sum-up Tony’s quintain poem…These titles would immediately, come to mind:
“The Postman Always Ring Twice,”
“The Killers,”
“Crisscross,”
and “Double Indemnity.”
[Or any film noir or mystery novel where there is a "scheming" dame out for material gain and not looking for "real"...l-o-v-e...] On a personal note, I don’t think that the “bullet” to the heart have to be so much physical.
deedee
Yep, I guess we could say any one of these could be envisioned, Dee Dee.
The Postman Always Rings Twice, especially. The short poem says quite a lot with the vivid images on display.
Positive comment!!!!
As always there’s a word economy in this precise composition that paints even a better picture that an acute character study. Therein lies it’s excellence.
Positive comment!!!
Happy to do you a favour DeeDee. This will be last my contribution here and this my last comment. Thanks to all my ‘friends’. I may write awful poetry but I have never been less than honest. The real ‘troll’ can now claim victory.
Where what it said here or anywhere else that your poetry was “awful?” Everything that I have read under each and every poem over the past year at this site has been super, super, super positive.
Was there even a single word of dissent here from even one solitary person?
No.
And why after this latest surge of positive comments at this thread would you inexplicably promise to end affiliation? How bizarre is this picture?
I am presently at a PC in school and I remain completely devastated by this attack against me which is unprovoked, unwarranted and and as undeserved as any attack initiated against me in my entire life. It not only questions my sincerity but completely undermines the support and confidence I have afforded each writer for the duration of the site’s existence. What have I done, or what has anyone done at this thread (please everyone, look at it again) to earn this kind of a promised cessation of affiliation?
I encourage any and all to comment here and tell me if I have done anything wrong. I am listening.
Sam, I can understand why you are so distraught. I have seen Tony d’Ambra’s posts at this site for a few years now, and I also know how excited you are when he posts a new poem or review. You could not have possibly been more enthusiastic or supportive after his review on that Iranian film appeared.
I have done my best to voice praise for Tony’s work, as I know it has deserved it. I also think his latest poem is excellent, and do not see a single word of dissent.
Peter—
You have been a Tony supporter and admirer for three years now. I appreciate all you have done for the site my friend.
Hi! Tony…
“Happy to do you a favour DeeDee…”
Once again…Merci,…
I don’t agree with your [statement? comment? opinion?...] here:“I may write awful poetry,”but… what so ever!… I think your very thoughts [and writings] are provoking, your intelligence…enviable and your honesty…Well, endearing…or admirable.
Now with that being said, I have posted a new banner paying homage to [Dashiell] Hammett and Tony’s poem [that I have aptly, titled..."Paying Homage To Dashiell-Film Gris-No-Film-Noir-Oui]
In honour Of author [Dashiell] Hammett, [Raymond] Chandler, [James M.] Cain, and [Cornell] Woolrich…who the Film Noir Foundation said, “gave “birth” to this thing coined by the French…known as film noir.”
I also wanted to recognize the French for “coining” the term…film noir…too!
[editor's note: In order to watch Siodmak's 1949 film "Crisscross" in it's entirety just follow the link which I have now high-lighted with the colour-red over there on my you-tube channel...Merci,]

Dee Dee I am a big fan of poetry since college and I commend you for your choice of words to describe a movie that features a lot of not so nice people doing not so nice things. Some people would say that you could get in trouble for supporting such terrible characters but I thought you did a wonderful job with the way you used nouns and verbs combined to create a feeling. When I was sending things off for Ebay I asked the postman what he thought of this movie and he said it offended him because it made people think postal workers are bad people, and there have been cases when post men have used guns against people when they were fired. The government is thinking about canceling Saturday delivery because they don’t make as much money now because of computers and there are right because look at how many people read under dark Sam is more popular now than he has ever been. You’re an excellent writer and I look forward to more of your words. Peace and Blessings
Super supportive and appreciable comment!!!
Shame it’s from the Easter Bunny.
Hello! Jack Marsh…
Dee Dee I am a big fan of poetry since college and I commend you for your choice of words to describe a movie that features a lot of not so nice people doing not so nice things…”
Well, first Of all, I’m not a poet, but I do know several poet(s) namely, Brian [Miller], Claudia [Schoenfeld], and Tony…and the words, in this very beautiful quintain
[A word that I became familiar with while "hanging" around Brian and Claudia]…belongs to our [good] friend Tony D’Ambra.
“Some people would say that you could get in trouble for supporting such terrible characters but I thought you did a wonderful job with the way you used nouns and verbs combined to create a feeling.”
Well, some people would say that Tony, could get in trouble for supporting such terrible characters [I bet Tony is reading this and thinking "Thanks, a lot! deedee..." lol]
Which I doubt they would ever say, because film noir [sometimes not all the time is/was] [very] reflective Of happening(s) in real life…
…and they would have to say that Tony use nouns and verbs together wonderfully, in order to create an atmospheric feeling.
On a personal note: I don’t think that the film “The Postman Always Ring Twice” have a connection with postal workers and their reputation. However, I do think that it’s very unfortunate that postal workers are losing their jobs…due, to advancing technology.
I think that you make an excellent point…here: “look at how many people read “Wonders in the Dark” Sam is more popular now than he has ever been…
Because without this kind Of modern technology I doubt if I would have met Sam Juliano and so many other online friends.
“You’re an excellent writer and I look forward to more of your words. Peace and Blessings”
Once again, Tony is an excellent writer and I like you will look forward to more Of his words. Now, with that being said, it’s so very nice to make your acquaintance and thank-you so very much for your comment and most definitely, the peace and blessings…too!
deedee
One of the true joys of my on-line affiliation has been meeting you my friend.
I’ve called you a saint, and have seen your generosity and good will manifest itself in every conceivable way.
You bring a smile to my face even when things are blue.
I’d also like to know who on this thread expressed displeasure with Tony’s poem?
I just read it through twice, and saw not a single work of criticism. Conversely I read nothing by praise. I also think this five-liner really hits the mark.
Thanks Fred, for confirming something I have pretty much figured out. And yes, you have indeed been supportive of Tony’s work for a very long time.
Sad. No you are not seeing things Sam. Every comment has expressed unqualified praise for the work in question. I have often commented at Tony d’Ambra’s posts and have been enriched by his unique talent. I also can vouch for your long-standing support for his work, but I’ll leave that be.
It appears there are behind-the-scenes head games being played here, but I don’t know enough about them to say anything more.
Thanks David. I remain in a zombie-like state this morning after this unexpected reaction and promise. I have not been in the house often (last night I attended a three-and-a-half-hour state play of Richard III with Kevin Spacey at BAM. I returned home very late and didn’t see any reactions until this morning.
I will probably be derided for being melodramatic, but one needs to emote with the roller coaster ride that is Wonders. When it gets to the point where you are assaulted for tending praise then you know the situation is really beyond your control.
Even my refusal to interfere with the bumping of Jamie’s regular Thursday ‘Beatles’ post for this one (out of undying and long-running loyalty to Dee Dee and Tony) all went for naught in the end, as I am as usual the bad guy here.
No matter what I do or what I don’t do I am always aseen as the ultimate hypocrite and the moniker of disloyalty.
I have long realize that survival at this site can only be managed by looking the other way. I much prefer to maintain all my close friendships and never engage in that nefarious game of subtraction.
I think another Tony once said, or was said to say, “I come not to praise Caesar but to bury him…”
OK, so this dart is intimating that my praise for Tony’s poem was insincere. I give up. I should have known that your appearance at this thread would not be to difuse wbut to intensify hard feelings.
How sick is it when after your read a post and then praise the author and his work that you are assaulted?
And now you come in and throw wood on the fire by questioning what I said. Should have I written 1,000 words on a five line poem to say how great it was? Would that have appeared as sincere? I have written far more volume on the author’s longer, more distingished poems. This one was quite good, but relatively modest compared to the others. I responded in the way I felt was fairest.
Are you saying I should not have responded at all? Elaborate your position.
I have just now been appraised at what Jamie said on another thread about Tony’s poem, which is nothing more than the tit for tat they have recently engaged in. I’m not saying Jamie is remotely right (he isn’t) but he was still smarting from critical comments made against his ‘Beatles’ posts. I have steadfastly stayed far away from those frays, though whenever I do get a bit involved it it always to lean towards Tony.
What sickens me is that the collateral damage from an individual battle always results in blanket rejection of everyone at the site with a scorching ‘guilt by association’ declaration that gleefully holds every last person accountable and promises life long banishment.
I had nothing to do with any of this. At all. Completely.
Well you know Sam you like politics a lot, remember you were into politics as much as movies at one point. And what I think you need to do to make the unhappy people happier is to go back to the California Cream Pie strategy. When they are upset, you have to visit them, you have to put your hand on the knee, and you have to look at them in one of their eyes. Because people like computers but when they see words on a screen it’s not the same thing as getting to eat, and getting to laugh. Ask anyone how you make peace, it’s food and smiles. You have wonderful people on here like Dee Dee and then trollers like the Jamies and Tony and I think trollers are also worthwhile people and they write well but they are harder to make happy than people like Dee Dee. Don’t do what Obama has done! If you wanna stay in office you need to know how to tell people what they wanna hear. That’s why Republicans always win in the end, they know what to say. I know you are a Democrat but to really bring the people together you should act like a Republican and return to the California Cream Pie days. Peace and Blessings
Tony and I go back four years now. We have had a few differences of opinion and even one fall-out. But we are close to the same age, we are both family men, and we share the perspective of time. Tony is head-strong, and doesn’t hold back, I am a politician who does still believe in much of what I say. i just embellish. Tony was a founder of this site. Tony spent much of his personal time managing the sidebar, offering personal advice, and expressing e mail concerns bout my health and well-being.
He will my friend for the rest of my life. I understand him, much like he understands me, and I have personal affection for him.
Yes I know this latest episode will instigate a hiatus, but disagreement or not, I will always hold my Australian friend in my affections.
As long as I’ve seen you in action, Sam, you have always been the most generous and encouraging of hosts.
I have been puzzled, over the past couple of years,—particularly in view of the excellence of writers dropping by for brief stints—that some others haven’t seen fit to help make the site hum.
Maybe this will be the year..
