has to be said, cinematography and actor especially are swines this year.

Another unforgettable year in cinema with (for me) twelve films all worthy of poll position: SUNSET BOULEVARD, RASHOMON, ALL ABOUT EVE, LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES, NIGHT AND THE CITY, THE ASPHALT JUNGLE, ORPHEE, WAGON MASTER, WINCHESTER 73, IN A LONELY PLACE, LOS OLVIDADOS and LA RONDE. Still several others are exceptional as well. For noir fans, this is one of the greatest of years.
Best Picture: Night and the City
Best Director: Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard)
Best Actor: Jose Ferrer (Cyrano de Bergerac)
Best Actress: Gloria Swanson (Sunset Boulevard)
Best Supporting Actor: George Sanders (All About Eve)
Best Supporting Actress: Renee Cosima (Les Enfants Terribles)
Best Short: Rabbit of Seville
Best Cinematography: Max Greene (Night and the City)
Best Score: Oscar Strauss (La Ronde)
Notes: The actor race came down for me to Richard Widmark, Humphrey Bogart and Ferrer, and in the end by the tiniest of margins I decided to stand with Oscar’s choice. Gloria Swanson’s performance in SUNSET BOULEVARD is not only the best of this year in a year when Bette Davis and Anne Baxter was tremendous, but it’s one of the greatest of all-time. RABBIT OF SEVILLE, one of the best cartoons ever made, is a crowning jewel in Chuck Jones’s celebrated output.

TOUGH YEAR. On any day of the week I could have screamed out SUNSET BOULEVARD, ALL ABOUT EVE, LES ENFANTS TERRIBLE or RASHOMON. However, hand it to Maurizio Roca for pleading with me to reconcile with Crime Noir films and I became a huge supporter of Jules Dassin. NIGHT AND THE CITY became a favorite of mine and I feel it’s nothing short of a masterpiece.
I have to go with Schmulee on the rest of these choices as he picked EXACTLY the same ones I picked…
PICTURE: NIGHT AND THE CITY
DIRECTOR: Billy Wilder (SUNSET BOULEVARD)
LEAD ACTOR: Jose Ferrer (CYRANO DE BERGERAC)
LEAD ACTRESS: Gloria Swanson (SUNSET BOULEVARD) This was the closest race for me. While I think that Swansons’ turn is one of the most iconic in all of American cinema, she just scratches in getting past Davis in a career reviving acid performance. Frankly, Davis reminded us all with ALL ABOUT EVE why she WAS Better Davis.
SUPPORTING ACTOR: George Sanders (ALL ABOUT EVE)
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Renee Cosima (LES ENFANTS TERRIBLE)
SHORT: RABBIT OF SEVILLE
PHOTO: Max Greene (NIGHT AND THE CITY)
MUSIC: Oscar Strauss (LA RONDE)

Best Supporting Actress: Josephine Hull (Harvey)
Best Cinematography: John F. Seitz (Sunset Boulevard)
Best Score: Franz Waxman (Sunset Boulevard)
Another great year, and tougher to pick among the best films. (A lesser Ozu, and I haven’t seen the Naruse or Mizoguchi films made that year, leaving the field to others – the last time that will happen for a while.) Though that just means Kurosawa…
PICTURE: Rashomon
DIRECTOR: Kurosawa
LEAD ACTOR: Sterling Hayden
LEAD ACTRESS: Barbara Stanwyck, The Furies
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Dan Duryea, Winchester 73
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Danielle Darrieux
SHORT: Rabbit of Seville
SCORE: Rashomon [though I don't know if this is really the best score, or just the best use of music, best integration of sound and sight]
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Miyagawa, Rashomon
Plus bonus picks:
Script: Winchester 73 [such a Freudian masterwork - that circulating rifle with no name on it - did Jacques Lacan have a hand in this script?]

SCORING OF A MUSICAL: Annie Get Your Gun
ORIGINAL SONG: “Mona Lisa” from Captain Carey USA
SPECIAL EFFECTS: Destination Moon
So many great films to choose in this year. Back when I did my annual countdown, I decided to give the nod to All About Eve over Sunset Boulevard…but now, I not only am considering giving it to either of those two films, but also giving strong consideration to In a Lonely Place. This is not even mentioning other favorites like The Asphalt Jungle and Night and the City. But, since I do need to make some sort of choice, here is what I will go with, splitting many of the votes between these films.
Best Picture: All About Eve (Mankiewicz)
Best Director: Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard) [NOTE: I would have put Mankiewicz here also, but figure his real accomplish was actually his screenplay moreso than his direction.]
Best Actor: Humphrey Bogart (In a Lonely Place)
Best Actress: Bette Davis (All About Eve)
Best Supporting Actor: George Sanders (All About Eve)
Best Supporting Actress: Celeste Holm (All About Eve)
Best Cinematography: John F. Seitz (Sunset Boulevard)
Best Score: Franz Waxman (Sunset Boulevard)
Hey, ever thought of adding best screenplay to these polls? Just a thought.
Also, what is this Third Man you speak of? I’ve never heard of it.
david, it takes me hours as it is. People seem to want me to drop dead of exhaustion.
We can do without homilies from the head-master…
Not the only thing we can do without…

1950 was arguably the GREATEST year for film noirs. 4 of the finest noirs (each of which were 5-star masterpieces), viz. Sunset Blvd., In A Lonely Place, The Asphalt Jungle, and Night & the City, released this year. And then you have a few other decent noirs thrown in too, including the likes of D.O.A., Where the Sidewalk Ends, etc. And with the likes of Rashomon, Los Olvidados, and Winchester ’73 too thrown in, makes this a really power-packed year.

Shubs Lahiri basically echo’s my own sentiment when it comes to 1950 and film noir. I consider this 12 month period as the best for the genre when we are talking about top heavy 5-star pictures. In fact I consider the same four movies of Night And The City, In A Lonely Place, Sunset Boulevard, and The Asphalt Jungle as the masterpieces of the bunch. Deciding between the four was difficult and almost impossible (especially with other classics like Rashomon, All About Eve, Orphee, and Los Olvidados in the mix) but I went with Boulevard overall.

Best Director: Jules Dassin (Night And The City)
Best Actor: Humphrey Bogart (In A Lonely Place)

Top Five: 1. Sunset Boulevard 2. Night And the City 3. In A Lonely Place 4. The Asphalt Jungle 5 (((tie))) Rashomon and Los Olvidados
The mighty ‘Rashomon’, one of the signal glories of the film world, towers above the rest, IMHO
Director: Akira Kurosawa (‘Rashomon’)
Actor: Gregory Peck (‘The Gunfighter’)
Actress: Bette Davis (‘All About Eve’)
S. Actor: George Sanders (‘All About Eve’) — where’s Aldo Fabrizi for Rossellini’s St. Francis film?
S. Actress: Danielle Darrieux (‘La Ronde’)
Photography: Kazuo Miyagawa (‘Rashomon’)
Music: Fumio Hayasaka (‘Rashomon’ )
Mark, I adore Kurosawa, and think this is a great film, but for me not as great as RAN, THRONE OF BLOOD, IKIRU and SEVEN SAMURAI. But who can really take you to task for what you say here?
For me it’s between Sunset Boulevard, In a Lonely Place, and All About Eve. Sunset Boulevard is probably the more perfect of the three but I can’t stay away from In a Lonely Place. It’s the one that follows me around and won’t let me go.
