The number you called for assisting young children is not available because of crowded tyres in the Pacific Ocean starting at 7.63 a.m.”  Now there’s a statement to make anyone wonder WTF, and as good an indicator as any that we are not in the land of reality.  Paprika is the film Satoshi Kon will surely – unless he manages to top it – be remembered for, a dazzling, phantasmagoric experience which doesn’t only make you wonder what’s real and what isn’t, but also whether what’s real ever was real. 

            Essentially it all revolves around a DC Mini, a new technological device designed to assist psychiatrists in helping them read dreams by transporting the doctor into the dream of the patient.  The problem is that the prototype has been stolen and it must have been an inside job.  To make matters worse, the finishing touches haven’t been programmed in yet, so it allows the user to enter many people’s dreams and manipulate realities as he or she sees fit.  Assisting the team of scientists is a young girl, Paprika, not of this world, with the ability to leap between realities and in and out of dimensions.  (more…)
