The winner can submit their screen-cap to movieman0283@gmail.com. Do not include film title in file name so I can participate as well! (Give a day or two for the new picture to go up)

Looking for a movie?
Wonders in the Dark is a blog dedicated to the arts, especially film, theatre and music. An open forum is highly encouraged, as the site proctors are usually ready and able to engage with ongoing conversation.
I see this as being Scandinavian or Eastern European. Let’s get the ball rolling.
Sorry, Stephen, it’s neither.
“I’m out” (!)
Perhaps it’s by Shimizu?
Er, no.
I’ll get a guess at Bunuel out of the way. The curvature at the corners of the screen is what really sets this apart– the actual shot of travelers on a rocky path is nothing special. This from the silent era, or am I making the wrong assumption from those rounded corners?
OK, I’m guessing it’s a Russian silent film.
Was this film originally made for television?
It’s a silent film, yes.
to me this isn’t Russian (as I think Allan has hinted now), at least to me there is no way this is geographic Russia we are looking at. To me, that looks to me Western Europe… France, or the Netherland country side. I suppose at that point it could be German too.
Italian?
Hell, this could be a Western for all we know, really.
French? Early Bresson?
There’s something in the light that makes me think of AU HASARD BALTHASAR.
Well it aint Bresson, Stephen, but it is French. If you look at the picture, it’s curved round the edges, a practice that pretty much went out at the end of the silent era. It’s a silent film, but then again, I think the aesthetic largely speaks for itself.
Bump
People aren’t even guessing here, which tends to suggest that even if I gve clues it would be no help. But I will anyway, it’s year of release was 1929.
I’ll take a single guess, but with the year and country now in hand, this will probably be solved by the end of the day.
Is it Dans la nuit?
I think I got it (though I’ve never seen the film):
Les Mystères du Château de Dé (The Mysteries of the Chateau of Dice) by Man Ray.
Negative to both I’m afraid.
[…] the way, Allan’s “Guess the Pic” remains unguessed. Get to it, folks – and Allan, may be time for another […]
I think it’s come to the point where no-one is going to get this. If the year and country are no help. It’s FINIS TERRAE by Jean Epstein.
I shall send another pic to Joel some time today, an easy one to get the ball rolling again.

I apologize, we had the year and country I should have kept guessing… the person who posts should never have to reveal the film.
I head my head in shame, on to the next (beautiful) next one.
also I must say I’ve read a little about Jean Epstein this morning seems like an interesting guy. what do you recommend of his stuff?
