Interesting year, nothing HUH-MAZING but some solid interesting, and playful flicks. Why has Glazer not made another film yet? And how far Gondry has fallen – looking at his output since Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind one has to wonder how they hell he pulled this one off (I credit Kaufman – which brings to mind, why do we never vote for Best Screenplays in these polls? Do we think these films wrote themselves? Kaufman would be my pick here)
Best Picture: Birth
Best Director: Jonathan Glazer for Birth
Best Actor: Bruno Ganz for Downfall
Best Actress: Nicole Kidman for Birth
Best Supporting Actor: Thomas Haden Church for Sideways
Best Supporting Actress: Virginia Madsen for Sideways
Best Cinematography: Harris Savides for Birth

Best Screenplay (let’s add this category!) – Charlie Kaufman for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Worst Movie: The Libertine
Most Overrated Move: 2046
Gondry does require a tight screenplay to discipline him when it comes to feature filmmaking, but in the music video form he has no master. Some of his videos are among the best short films ever made.

Kinda surprised at the lack of love COLLATERAL is getting. If I was voting (and I am definitely NOT) that would be my top pick. Also am I the only one who was underwhelmed by ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND? I totally fail to see what’s great in it, sure it’s interesting and playful but Kaufman has made both funnier and more ambitious films.
