Lucille is home after her same-day spinal disc surgery and all is well even with some pain to negotiate through medication. Many thanks to all who sent on their well wishes at the site and on social media. The current plans are for her to remain home for about two weeks before returning to her Principal’s position. This past week has been hectic in preparation and then at hospital. This was the second time this school calendar year Lucille had surgery. The first was a partial knee replacement, which like this week’s procedure was necessitated by arthritis. Thanks again to all!
This past week James Clark published a stupendous essay in his ongoing Ingmar Bergman series on The Magician. J.D. Lafrance contributed a splendid piece on Stephen Soderburgh’s Out of Sight.
We did see two current films this past week, one in theaters and the other on netflix where it debuted. I have the ratings, but will have more to say on both soon. Us is a stylistically superior horror film by Justin Peale, and Girl is a Belgian film about a transgender girl who seeks SRS surgery and success as a ballerina.
Us **** 1/2 (Saturday night) Secaucus multiplex
Girl (Belgium) *** (Sunday) netflix
Good to hear that Lucille is on her way back to her limbo-dancing best, Sam! Sorry to learn she’s still having to navigate some pain on the way there. (Is it still the shoulder nerves?) All our warmest wishes are with her.
As ever thank you so much John! Deeply appreciated. Well, here we are now ten (10) days from the surgery and Lucille is coming along quite nicely. She will see the doctor Tuesday and probably will be cleared to work, though she’ll stay out a few days more to be safe. Again I want you to know how we deeply cherish your kind words and concern.
That’s good to hear that Lucille is coming along so well, Sam. I’ve been having hospital adventures of my own for the past week or so — of which more soon.
Great news on Lucille! Wishing her continued recovery!
Ricky my friend, many thanks for the very kind words. I did inform Lucille days back.
Glad to hear Lucille’s good news Happy Recovery. We are looking into Stem Cell infusions for Tom’s arthritic knees It is so expensive but we have several friends who have had great success. Hard and painful disease to deal with – My Mother died when arthritis collapsed her vertebra of her spine – the disease everywhere in her body, at 94 she just chose pain relief. Wishing Lucille well
Thank you many times over Patricia our excellent friend! So To, has arthritis issues to? Ugh. I was just getting ready to say that arthritis is never life-threatening, and then I read what you stated about your mom. Bless her that she made 94, but no less terrible to lose her at any age. Very good to hear that some of your friends did very well with this procedure. In any case, all is coming along quite well and it is anticipated Lucille will only be out five more days to be sure. Thanks again!
I, too, saw Us and found it to be a complex and entertaining horror film that rises above most in the genre:

The week prior, I saw Transit, which was another thought-provoking masterpiece from Petzold:

I expect both of these films to be Top Tenners for the Year.
David, I will head over now and check out your glowing reviews of US and TRANSIT!! Thank you for posting the links here! As to US, I did indeed find it a remarkable achievement, but perhaps not quite as excellent as Peale’s previous film GET OUT. But even at this late date I am still sorting things out. TRANSIT is a masterpiece for sure. I am assuming that German film will be in Top 10, but not so sure about US. I’ll see how the year goes. Thanks again!
And glad to hear Lucille’s surgery went well and hopefully continues well in recovery!
David, Lucille and I deeply appreciate your exceedingly kind words! All is indeed moving forward quite nicely as of ten days from surgery my longtime friend!
The best to Lucille and her continued recovery! Talk about resilience!
You got that right Frank!! Deeply appreciated our dear longtime friend!
