Scorching heat has understandably sent many taking refuge indoors under overworked air conditioning as the month of July starts off the way June ended.  July 4th itself was tolerable, though different regions report varying degrees of the hot stuff.  Watching the musical 1776, was as always a special delight for Independence Day, a day this year we ended up staying in the house.  We do have a short vacation to Wildwood, New Jersey lined up for a few days during the second week of August and of course are hoping for tolerable temperatures.

This past week J.D. Lafrance published a splendid essay on Stripes.

Lucille and I saw one new film in the theater.  Zola, directed by Janicza Bravo, was a well-made black comedy. (more…)
