I will have to save this for when I get home. No Youtube at work!!!
And considering that Sam and I are the stars, I suggest you hit the “full frame” button. The regular aspect ratio isn’t big enough for the both of us!!!!
LOLOLOL!!!!!!
Hahaha!!!! =D
Okay Dennis so I watched it finally! I’m a bit surprised you were so easy on The Artist. I remember a few weeks back you were kind of dumping on it a bit. You kind of let Sam have the floor there and let him praise it to high heaven. I must admit I’m pretty surprised Viola Davis has come on so strong. She didn’t even win the Golden Globe in her own category. That seemed odd to me.
JON-Sam makes alot of good points in the video that are worth hitting on again. Viola Davis DID NOT win the lions share of prizes it’s true, Streep pretty much dominated the critics prizes and took the Globe. However, and this was Sam’s very good point, the SAG went to Davis and almost always that prize indicates where the Oscar voters will go. Since winning her second Oscar in 1982 for SOPHIE’S CHOICE Streep has been nominated again and again but always runs in second, third or fourth place. General thinking in Hollywoodland is that the accolades she has received over the years as being “the greatest living American actress” should be award enough on top of the two Oscars she has already won.
I know this sucks, Streeps performance in this category very much looms over the other four nominees and all of them (with the exception of Rooney Mara, giving a bizarre, but inspired, turn in DRAGON TATTOO) are really nothing all that special in comparison. What also furthers the perplexing nature of all this is that just last week the BRITISH ACADEMY gave Streep the prize for BEST ACTRESS. Considering who Streep is playing in THE IRON LADY, you’d think the British endorsement would propel her towards a easy victory on Oscar night. But, and Sam is right, it doesn’t…
Viola Davis, in my estimation, is now the one to beat for the prize and it seems the BEST ACTRESS race is the only category that could produce a surprise (unless the Academy goes wild and splits the PICTURE/DIRECTOR races-giving Director to Scorsese and Picture to THE ARTIST)…
As for my “warming up to THE ARTIST”; I don’t think I was every really too cold toward it. Granted, it’s not my choice for the BEST film of the year (that slot would go to Mallick’s THE TREE OF LIFE) and it’s not even close to being my FAVORITE (that mantle would go to Lynne Ramsay’s WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN-a film that has grown tremendously for me the more I think about it-HUGO would be another favorite of mine)… But, while I DID have some problems with THE ARTIST, I mostly felt that it was a well made film and I have to praise it if it brings one modern youth closer to exploring the world of silent cinema (for that alone it deserves an Oscar)…
I would have preferred the Academy went back to the old method of picking five films for BEST PICTURE and just really get into looking more towards the critics for their lead to the nominations. If I was the sole Academy voter the five films I would have selected for BEST PICTURE would look like this:
THE TREE OF LIFE (the winner)
A SEPARATION (again, a film I had some reservations about, but a film I still see the merit in)
HUGO
THE ARTIST
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
The BEST ACTORS would have been:
Ryan Gosling (DRIVE)
Micheal Fassbender (SHAME)-The Winner
Jean DeJardin (THE ARTIST)
Gary Oldman (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY)
Gerge Clooney (THE DESCENDANTS)
The BEST ACTRESSES would have been:
Tilda Swinton (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN)-The Winner
Meryl Streep (THE IRON LADY)
Rooney Mara (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)
Berenice Beijo (THE ARTIST)
Kirsten Dunst (MELANCHOLIA)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Albert Brooks (DRIVE)
Christopher Plummer (BEGINNERS)
Hunter McCracken (THE TREE OF LIFE)-The Winner
Robert Forrester (THE DESCENDANTS)
Ezra Miller (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Janet McTeer (ALBERT KNOBBS)
Marion Cotillard (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS)
Charlotte Gainesbourg (MELANCHOLIA)-The Winner
Shaliene Woodley (THE DESCENDANTS)
Kera Knightly (A DANGEROUS METHOD)
DIRECTOR
Terrence Mallick (THE TREE OF LIFE)-The Winner
Martin Scorsese (HUGO)
Michel Hazanavicius (THE ARTIST)
Nicholas Winding Refn (DRIVE)
Lynne Ramsay (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN)
Well Dennis, this was a full and measured response. No complaints I guess and you have your opinions. I disagree on the ability of The Artist bringing in youth to see Silent Films. The showing I went to locally, had 4 couples in it, all with gray hair. I was the only one in the crowd under age 70. Small sample size I know, but hey.
To be fair, if old people are ready to watch bad fake silent films than maybe young people are ready to watch good ones.
Sam – Ohhhhhhh, this was great fun to watch!
And, we had a lot of fun making it. I still think there’s about 2 hrs and 30 mins of footage (some of it achingly funny-but, then again, whenever Sam and I get in a room together the nit-picking, chop-busting and razzing hits an all time high) that hit the cutting room floor.
Thanx so much for the kind words Laurie. You’re a peach!!!!!
Hello! Sam Juliano…
This discussion about the Oscars@ between you and Dennis was very interesting as I watched, listen, and ate breakfast…lol…over your discussion.
Thanks, to you, Dennis, and Jason…too!
deedee š
I was worried about you DEE-DEE.
I said, “Geez, I hope she DOESN’T watch this while eating breakfast”. The effects of watching this might lead to acid-indigestion.
But, you got through it OK and I’m glad you liked it without loosing your corn-flakes…
š
Lotta good points made in this video, fantastically edited by Jason, and most of them were by ME!

LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!
As ever, Mr. Modesty.
Sam, this was another utter delight. I like the idea of expanding it from last year, as the awards were given a wider discussion. Your real love for The Artist shines through.
Dennis…
I look forward to the video of the Oscar night itself.
Wonderful conversation and great video!
Cool…I really enjoyed this
Best Director: Jason
Best Actor : Sam
Best Supporting Actor : Dennis
Itās that time of the year againā¦.
Decent length for this Oscar Talk video. Would also like to see the extended cut get a release date as well. Aside from all the Polifroni boastingā¦ we know who the real star of this conversation is lol.
They’ve gotta tell us the next time they decide to do one of these things.
Or not, come to think of it.
OUCH! That hurt…
That’s to do with the thought of being up on YouTube in general, Dennis. Nothing about either of your company.
Thanks to all for the wonderful comments, and a great big thank you to the incomparable Dee Dee for successfully negotiating the pictured rectangle that appears at the front.
Fascinating discussion, Sam and Dennis. Great stuff. I’m pleased that Billy Crystal is presenting it this year.:)
but maybe you two could do it next year?
Great discussion.
