has to be said, cinematography not the easiest, but score very weak this year.
There is no dearth of quality films in 1953. My own Number 1 choice is clear, as it’s one of the truly great films of all-time and for me in my personal Top 3, perhaps even No. 1, or the equal of next year’s best film. Recent awards as #1 and #3 from filmmakers and critics in the S & S polling further validates it’s spectacular regard, but one doesn’t need confirmation to be moved to the depths of their being. Ozu is one of the cinema’s greatest geniuses and in a canon of treasures 1953 offers his supreme masterpiece.
Best Picture: Tokyo Story
Best Director: Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story)
Best Actor: Chishu Ryu (Tokyo Story)
Best Actress: Danielle Darrieux (Madame De)
Best Supporting Actor: Charles Vanel (The Wages of Fear)
Best Supporting Actress: Setsuko Hara (Tokyo Story)
Best Short: Duck Amuck
Best Cinematography: Kohei Sugiyama (Gate of Hell)
Best Score: Victor Young (Shane)
The Tell-Tale Heart is also a masterpiece short. It is very tough to pass up Thelma Ritter for Best Supporting Actress.
And these films are all fabulous: SAWDUST AND TINSEL, MADAME DE, UGETSU, I VITELLONI, EL, A JAPANESE TRAGEDY, THE NAKED SPUR, PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET, SUMMER WITH MONIKA, WAGES OF FEAR, M. HULOT’S HOLIDAY, GATE OF HELL, THE BIG HEAT, THE BAND WAGON, SHANE, THE SUN SHINES BIGHT, WHERE CHIMNEYS ARE SEEN.
Beyond:
Best Screenplay: Madame De
Best Editing: The Wages of Fear
Best Costumes: Gate of Hell
Best Art Direction: Gate of Hell
I gotta go with my dear friend as far as best picture of the year. In my estimation there are about a dozen films on this list that could easily take the big prize if they were listed any other year. However, with TOKYO STORY, Ozu scores his supreme and most subtle masterwork and I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I thwarted it from taking the big prize.
But, WAGES OF FEAR is hot on its ass.
So…
BEST PICTURE: TOKYO STORY
SHORT: DUCK AMUCK

Sam I love Shane and that score is wonderful, something I can recall in my mind at any time without even needing to hear it to remember. I’ve been watching it since I was 4 and it’s one of my favorites.
Brutal. I could go in many directions in most of the categories, but feel pretty certain about the big prize.

Another absurdly difficult year, made a little easier by the fact that there’s not a film I’ve been more obsessed with over the past 12 months than THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT. I think about it all the time and have watched it more times than I care to admit, but like Samuel said, in general any of these categories could swing in any direction. There are so many titans here.
Picture – The Sun Shines Bright
Director – John Ford (The Sun Shines Bright)
Actor – Charles Winninger (The Sun Shines Bright)
Actress – Ingrid Bergman (Voyage to Italy)
Supporting Actor – Robert Ryan (The Naked Spur)
Supporting Actress – Thelma Ritter (Pickup on South Street)
Cinematography – Christian Matras (Madame De…)
Short – Duck Amuck
Yep that’s passion Drew and I tip my cap to you! A great film indeed!
I never cared for The Sun Shines Bright, it just seemed watered down from Judge Priest which was no classic to begin with., Ah well.
I feel it’s one of Ford’s greatest films myself.
Wow there are alot of personal favorites from this year that I’m not going to be able to honor properly…Pickup on South Street, Shane, The Naked Spur, The Earrings of Madame De, The Big Heat, Stalag 17, Sawdust and Tinsel etc. I’m going to try to spread the wealth here as a result.
Picture- Tokyo Story
Dir- Tati – M. Hulot’s Holiday
Actor- James Stewart – The Naked Spur
Actress- Danielle Darrieux – Madame De…
Supp. Actor- Jack Palance- Shane
Supp. Actress – Gloria Grahame- The Big Heat

Best Picture: The Wages Of Fear
Top Five: 1. The Wages Of Fear 2. Ugetsu 3. The Big Heat 4. Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday 5. Tokyo Story
While the tendency has been to add more categories in these polls by voters, I decided to go the other way and stop pretending I care who wins Best Supporting Actor etc…
Be rest assured my friend, that I enjoy reading your annual acting picks!
Ditto, and I’m appalled ‘The Big Heat’ isn’t MR’s #1 choice.
We are in exalted territory here, and among these films, what is there to choose? Or – how to explain the choices you make? Anyway – as devoted as Ozu-phile as I am, this is Mizoguchi’s year.
PICTURE: Ugetsu Monogatari
DIRECTOR: Mizoguchi
LEAD ACTOR: Richard Widmark, Pickup on South Street
LEAD ACTRESS: Barbara Stanwyck, All I Desire
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Lee Marvin, The Big Heat
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Thelma Ritter
SHORT: Duck Amuck (Truth is, this might be my favorite film of the year…)
SCORE: Ugetsu Monogatari
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Kazuo Miyagawa, Ugetsu
Plus bonus picks::
Script: Beat the Devil (“I’m going upstairs to read my bible”)
Musical Number: Some mention must be made of “Shine on my Shoes” I think…
This is also the kind of year that tempts me to list off my favorite moments of the year… The old drunks coming home in Tokyo Story… the reactions to Peterson’s death in Beat the Devil… Shine on My shoes… pretty much the entire running time of Ugetsu, though I suppose in particular – the ending; the song; the taking of the enemy samurai’s head – etc…
Weeping Sam: With you and I it’s only a question of timing. I see 1954 as Mizoguchi’s year, though I won’t deny that the mid-50’s are owned by Ozu, Mizoguchi and Japanese cinema in general. Your choices here are excellent, but you certainly don’t me to tell you that.
Well, if you put a gun to MY head and asked me which film towers even over the OZU, I would be inclined to say DUCK AMUCK as well.
Could be, along with ONE FROGGY EVENING, Chuck Jones greatest swing for the bleechers…
The man was an out-n-out genius…
My choices for 1953:
Best Picture: Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday
Best Director: William Wyler (Roman Holiday)
Best Actor: Chishu Ryu (Tokyo Story)
Best Actress: Harriet Andersson (Summer of Monika) & Audrey Hepburn (Roman Holiday)

Best Screenplay: Sydney Boehm (The Big Heat)
Top 5:
1. Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday
2. Roman Holiday
3. Tokyo Story
4. The Big Heat
5. The Wages of Fear
Just Missed: From Here to Eternity, Summer with Monika, The Naked Spur, Stalag 17 (Unfortunately, I haven’t watched Ugetsu yet – a glaring viewing gap which I plan to correct soon).
A difficult choice between Madame de…, Ugetsu, and Tokyo Story. I’m going to go with the one that simply gives me the most pleasure.

I just could not bring myself to a place where I would prize Ozu’s TOKYO STORY over Anthony Mann and his incredible THE NAKED SPUR, arguably the best of his collaborations with James Stewart. Also, just to let you know…was never a big fan of THE WAGES OF FEAR (I always thought SORCERER is a better film).

Best Actor: Paul Muni (Scarface)

Sounds like Joe is a denizen and lover of the City of Big Shoulders, though he sure doesn’t have a sense of chronology (and I know how much you love ‘Chicago’ and Rene Weedwhacker.
I don’t know why but this comment made me chuckle more than any other.
I think it’s the name.
