George Washington?
Hi! Jon Lanthier,
Is it Empire of the Ants?
Deedee š
Joseph: pretty good guess, actually, although both the film and director are incorrect.
Deedee: Ha! That’s not it, although now I kinda wish it was…
Blue Velvet?
Another great guess from Pierre, but not quite. I think the specimens in BLUE VELVET were black ants (among other insects) and not red, but don’t quote me on that.
Fiddlesticks!
Sorry, Pierre, it’s not from the 1926 Harry Langdon film “Fiddlesticks,” either… š
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids?
Hi! Jon Lanthier,
I’am Googling like “mad,” but is this screenshot from that 1998 made for Tv..er film called Legion of Fire: Killer Ants!
Deedee š
Is it Gordon M. Douglas’s 1954 Them!?
š (Testing)
Deedee š
I think Allan Fish, is right when he said, we are going to be here until Doomsday! that is if not….
Robert Scheerer’s 1977 film
It Happened at Lakewood Manor š
Deedee š
Btw, I just watch the trailer for Empire of the
Ants over there on You Tube and
compared to the ants in your screenshot those
ants are “unbelieveable”….and actress Joan Collins fear factor is “unbelieveable” too!….Just kidding!…
She appears to be genuinely afraid of those “gigantic ants.”
Deedee š
Lol Deedee, we may be here awhile…
I was waiting for someone to guess “Them!” though. And I think we’ve proved something here: we could damn near have a Formicidae Film Festival if we wanted. Someone should get on that right away.
Oh, and the screenshot isn’t from a film about ants, although that scene in particular does use the insects as a metaphor of sorts. That’s right!: A hint for this ridiculously unfair challenge.
The ‘burbs?
Another good guess, Joseph, but not quite…
“Travels With My Ant”? (The ant in the foreground looks SO much like Maggie Smith. . . .)
………Is the by any chance ‘ANTZ’? That would be too obvious, though………..
Jon Lanthier,…Is this Hiroshi Teshigahara’s 1964 film Suna No Onna?….hmmm š
Deedee š
Is this pray tell a Bunuel film? Let me think.
Hey, Dee Dee, you may have it there!
Guys, I must say, the answers this screenshot is inspiring are well worth the effort.
Isn’t “Suna No Onna” in black and white? Anyway that’s not it either.
More hints, coz this is all in good fun anyway:
The film is from the 90s.
The director — but not the film — is in the Criterion Collection.
I wonder if it is something by Carlos Saura.
Jon Lanthanier said, “Isnāt āSuna No Onnaā in black and white? Anyway thatās not it either. “
Ha!ha! LOL š
Oops!…just googling anything…like mad!
Deedee š
I wonder if this is something from Carlos Saura.
Not Saura, but you’ve got the location right, Sam… š — and if that doesn’t give it away….
I didn’t think this film was all that obscure, but then, this is a pretty obscure screenshot from it.
Jon Lanthier said, “Isnāt āSuna No Onnaā in black and white? Anyway thatās not it either. “
ha!ha!…I wasn’t aware of the fact,
that “Suna No Onna” was in black and white?!? š
I just wrote the title of any film that popped up…with the words…”metaphor” and “insects”
Deedee š
Hmm. I’m thinking it’s an Almodovar, but no idea which one. I’ll guess All About My Mother, just for kicks.
Jon Lanthier, This is my final guess, but is it… Ā”Ćtame!
Deedee š¦
Sorry Deedee (I don’t believe Almodóvar is in the Criterion Collection…). But, Ā”Atame! is one of my favorite Almodóvar’s, I will say that…
As you can see, if it’s not Maggie Smith, I give up.
Well, I’m screwed. You know, Jon, only one film came to mind when I saw the picture whne you emailed me and that was del Toro’s Cronos. But del Toro isn’t in the Criterion collection and besides, he’s Mexican not Spanish.
So, other Spaniards in the CC, off the top of my head…J-A Bardem…can’t be. Then there’s only Erice, and the only 90s film of his it can be is The Quince Tree Sun, but I don’t remember any ants among the quinces.
Personally, I prefer Pierre’s Maggie Smith guess myself!!!! LOL!
I am still pondering. Jon, you have everybody going here.
I suppose he could mean Cuaron, Mexican but near enough, but I can’t think of any 90s film from Cuaron that would have this shot in. Can’t be Great Expectations as one can tell that from the shape of the cap – that isn’t a 2.35 cap and it woul dneed to be. A Little Princess? Unlikely, besides they were both in the English language. Erice seems more likely bizarrely enough.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?
I don’t know why you’re still thinking about it, Sammy old boy, you couldn’t even guess Metropolis, so carrying on trying to think of this one after not recognising that is a victory for optimism over experience.
ha! You are a character my acid-tongued colleague.
Joseph, that isn’t a bad guess, but F and L is actually in the Criterion Collection, so according to Jon’s clues, it’s not the one. But this has you goin, as it does me! LOL.
Just WitD’s Addison de Witt, my friend, and God does it need him. š
Just WitDās Addison de Witt, my friend, and God does it need him.
Here, here, Allan. It’s a pleasure to read the work of someone whose cynicism and barbed style surpasses my own grumpiness.
Oh, and I never specifically said the DIRECTOR was from the location in question… š
I’ve just confirmed that this film can be found via google, if one were to align my clues into the proper configuration of queries. After the screenshot is revealed I may upload the scene from the film in question (it’s great), if I can, so we can all see it in context.
God only knows, I can only assume Jon means that the film is set in Spain but isn’t Spanish. Then they have to still be working in the 90s or else be a modern director.
Is it Gus Van Sant’s little known film “My Travels with my aunt and a dachshund called Henry in the land of the CGI ants”
That sounds like the right answer there Allan.
If so, then how did you get your copy, Jon, Van Sant has the only copy tucked away in his basement in a box marked “not to be opened until 3003”
I was kidding, you fool.
For my reply insert yours…
Alien Autopsy
Oh my god this is too funny…I step out for lunch and we’re going on 40+ comments upon my return…
Me thinks you took this picture in your backyard. š
Joseph: I have an acute ant anxiety due to a childhood trauma involving a box of sugar cookies and a rather irascible hill of the insects. Case in point, were this from my backyard I doubt I’d be able to steady the camera enough to take such a shot.
Unless I had a tripod. Which I do. But still…
Even if I knew the answer–which I most assuredly do not–I don’t think I’d give it because this thread is just too amusing. I keep saying it–Sam and Allan (or Allan and Sam?) need to have their own television show…
Alexander has given me an idea. How about a pod-cast. Use Skype to set-up aconference call, then let them rip while recording the stream to an MP3. The sit-com will follow š
Which one will get to say, “Why, Shana, you impudent slut!”?
Pierre!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
Tony, that’s an excellent idea!!!!!!!!!!
Omg! Omg!….I step AWAY from the board and when I RETURN there is still is no answer! …..and 51 responses!
Joseph and Jon!!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! š
Deedee š
L.O.L.
Not to toot my own horn, but is this not just about the best “guess the picture” thread ever?
And GREAT podcast idea. One stipulation: revolving guest stars who attempt to mediate between A & S as sparks fly from heady friction. I’m sure Tony, Alexander, Jenny, DCD and myself would all love to be bowled over with the frustrated laughter that would produce…
Hey don’t forget me guys. I’m here too, but I don’t know the answer from hell!
OK, Jon. Barcelona. Whit Stillman. No?
Hi! Sam Juliano,
You noticed that I mimic your laughter verbatim…
and Jon, LOL…. š
Deedee š
With the exception of the (Smiley, but of course!)
The “Smiley addict” š
Jenny, I REALLY like that BARCELONA answer, as Stillman is in the Criterion collection with METROPOLITAN. I think you got it there!!!!
Dee Dee, I did notice you mimiced my standard LOL!!!!
LOL!!!!
And Jon, I have to hand it to you. This is indeed a thread for the ages.
Kudos to you.
Jenny, nicely done. Stillman is one of my personal favorites. This screenshot comes directly after Chris Eigeman crushes Taylor Nichols’ analogy ants with a capitalist rock!
CONGRATULATIONS JENNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FANTASTIC!!!!!
Tomorrow, Allan will accept your own screen cap or suggestion that he can find in his files!
Jon, you have OUTDONE yourself with this thread!!!!!
Now let’s see who’s the first to bring in a cap of the screen faded to black between scenes and we have to guess which scene it is. But thanks, jenny, you saved me going for my surprise cap, which I’m saving for the day when no-one gets the cap and thus no-one can nominate.
As for the podcast idea, God help us. I remember being with a mate of mine over here and doing voices to Browning’s Dracula but with added comedy, it was a howl, wish I’d recorded it.
